2 resources to help you define your personal values

Checking in with your values is one of the simplest things you can do to figure out why you’re feeling “off.”

By getting clear on what’s important to you, it becomes easy to understand where things are getting out of alignment (and where things might actually be better than you realize).

Here are 2 resources I recommend to help you determine your top values:

  1. Living Into Our Values worksheet + podcast episode from Brené Brown

    • What I like about it:

      • This resource is FREE and comes along with a podcast episode to provide context, guidance, and hear how Brené and her sister use this tool at the beginning of each new year

      • It’s set up to help you think about your own behaviors and ways you’re living into or out of alignment with your values - so prepare to take a hard look inside to see where you might be contributing to the challenges you’re facing. This one gets edgy when we’re in a cycle of blaming our (external) circumstances for our unhappiness.

    • Other considerations:

      • This exercise encourages you to chose just 2 values, which many people find really challenging. You could still use this guide and list of values, but select 5 or 10 values, if that suits you better

  2. Live Your Values deck from Lisa Congdon

(also available on Amazon if you’re not in North America)

    • What I like about it:

      • This tool is a physical deck of cards (see photo above) that you can sort through like playing cards, which can be a helpful experience for people who like things to be more tangible or interactive

      • The cards are beautifully designed and the deck includes a large number of possible values that you might not have considered, but that may really resonate with you

      • I use this tool with many of my clients as a jumping-off-point for our coaching journey. Many of them go on to share it with a partner or friend to see how their values align or where they might be different.

    • Other considerations:

      • This resource costs money and it could take a little time to be delivered. If you’re feeling motivated NOW to sort out your values and you might lose motivation by the time your package arrives, check out the free tool above or find another one online that you can do today.
